While most of the attention goes to concerns about cyberwar and high profile attacks by groups like Anonymous, the really big risk may lie with SMBs with inadequate security staff and solutions.
Business Solutions Magazine identifies 6 garden variety risks, but which many of the 6 million US SMBs are exposed to:
- Unscanned USB drives, external hard drives, CDs, or DVDs that may be infected
- Lack of BYOD policies on which employee and visitor devices are supported and how these devices will connect to their networks.
- Spear phishing, which “fools recipients about 19% of the time because it incorporates a vast amount of personal data about the user, which is easily obtained through social networking communities”
- Delayed patching of commercial software
- Exposure to consumer grade cloud storage which replaces traditional on-site file server, which managed access rights and audit logs
- Inadequate backing up of data and recovery plans
