As part of my book research I learned in the US there are over 70,000 outlets to buy mobile phones – the AT&T, Verizon, Sprint etc stores, the Apple Store, Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile (the smaller footprint for malls), Walmart and on and on. I have learned that over 400 consumer electronics devices now use Gorilla Glass from Corning, which was introduced just a couple of years ago.
Great we have that much choice, but as soon as we buy the phone, we are stuck with the carrier – one and only – for 2 years. Pretty striking how all that choice disappears.
Of course, we have the jailbreak choice. A friend of mine was telling me how quickly his teenager broke into an iPhone he bought. It now works on a different carrier. But most of us are too obedient to think of doing that. And the carriers take advantage of that loyalty by making us paying ridiculous overseas roaming, changing terms like data limits mid-course through the contract etc.
So, I was pleased to find in my book research, the next gen UPS DIAD (the device its 100,000 drivers use to scan bar codes, to navigate, use as a walkie talkie etc) “provides on-the-fly switching between cellular carriers meaning the computer can automatically jump to another cellular carrier if the preferred carrier's signal is lost. “
Now UPS is also the biggest buyer of mobile minutes in the world, so sure they get great rates from the carriers. But imagine now how easy it will also be them to optimize rates even more with the subtle threat of being able to switch on the fly.
With that technology available, it is an opportunity for device makers to similarly bring individual consumers and businesses that functionality. Let’s get to real choice – not just the 70,000 outlets and the hundreds of devices and then get locked in.
