Blogs and newspapers and Twitter are all a- flutter about amazon’s outage and even more the lack of supposed transparency and accountability. BP must be relieved we now have a new villain to beat up!
In the cries for more disclosure, remedies etc let me suggest we also ask IBM, HP, CSC, Accenture, Savvis, Verizon, hosting firms etc that run most of today’s data centers to also share key metrics – availability, failure, efficiency (like PUE of their centers), average cost they bill for processing cycles and storage etc.
I am pretty confident we will find cloud performance is many basis points better than on-premise data centers and cost many times lower. The other thing that may surprise folks is the last time many on-premise data centers ran a full disaster recovery drill. They have their own disasters and plenty of down time – they just are not that public or reported in blogs, newspapers or Twitter.
So, time for transparency all the way around – thanks to amazon.
