Last year I wrote “If you had told me 5 years ago, the boring data center would be one of the hottest areas in the technology industry I would have laughed.”From new space design to green computing to virtualization to remote management to consolidations to clouds, the DC has been a hotbed of activity.
And in recent weeks, Cisco’s entry into “Unified Computing” and HP’s planned new servers are adding to the excitement.
Reality check - most of the DC innovations have not come from outsourcers who run many data centers or from internal IT. They have come from unusual places like Google and Microsoft.
It’s time to start re-negotiating with the outsourcers (or churning them) to upgrade their DCs, consolidate their foot prints, lower their own compute and storage and other DC costs.
Now that should be really exciting.
