As virtualization gathers steam, The Sales Engineer Guy does a nice job cataloging views on how it will likely affect other software licensing. The software industry is usually 3 steps ahead of corporate procurement when it comes to shifts in pricing metrics and terms.
Between data center consolidation projects I see outsourcers try to pile on around virtualization, and likely increases in cost of other licenses and related maintenance, the payback from poor old VMWare and similar tools will likely get massively diluted.
