Sun is buying MySQL. To me this is much better news for buyers than the other Oracle/BEA announcement today.
While the temptation will be to continue to sell the database as cheaper, open source alternative (along with Ingres, which like MySQL ,was likely to go public this year) to IBM and Oracle and even Microsoft, I would really like to see Sun move this to a utility computing model, and sell it as more as a service, with bundled storage and processing also at utility pricing. Like amazon.com.
In the past Sun has shown promise but stumbled on offering utility products. But then, so have most other enterprise vendors who would rather sell customization.
