I groaned when I read all the stuff about Google OpenSocial yesterday. First a compliment - pretty impressive how quickly, how many different partners Google roped in. It's Business Development 2.0.
But ...like Mukund points out, the constraint is attention. I already have so many LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo invitations I have not responded to. Not because I do not like these folks, it's just that I am sure I will never hear a word from 98% of them again. Also, every message through these networks requires sign-ons. On the road, that means waiting long minutes on the AT&T Wireless network.
So here's my suggestion. All invitations should come with a $ 25 Starbucks card (or 50 Serios). For every meaningful conversation we have over the next 12 months, we credit back a quarter of the amount.
I can guarantee this way you will have my attention every time I order a cappuccino. And I will remember you even more every time I listen to the free iTunes I can download with each Starbucks card -)
