So while I am in London, I read about BA's mountain of baggage problems. "Jumbo jets full of lost luggage - but no passengers - have been flown across the Atlantic in a bid to ease the Heathrow baggage handling fiasco."
And I go I am glad I am flying out of Gatwick. Except the Gatwick Express from Victoria, for which you pay a premium (almost $ 32 one way, $ 48 in first class), is chock full of passengers and baggage. And a snack trolley car trying hard to navigate the bags and the people. But no baggage on overhead racks. Because they are poorly designed and would not accept any decent sized roller (or other) bags. And on the other hand, the extra large overhead bins on the Delta 767 are mostly empty. Why? Because BAA will only allow one carry on bag. (and so will many European airports)
So let's get this straight. You force people to check a bag which could easily travel in the cabin. Then you use empty 747s to fly the delayed bags to their frustrated owners? Sounds like a process angioplasty opportunity to me. In the meantime, might as well strip the large overhead bins on Delta and move them to the Gatwick Express. At least make that 30 minute ride a bit more comfortable.
