This continues a series of burning questions I pose to my readers to hopefully spark some debate in the comments.
My long tooth in the industry has allowed me to see many "solution driven requirements" where we as technology fans dream up reasons to justify buying an application or a gadget. I think we are seeing that today with social networking tools. We are trying hard to turn Facebook, Twitter etc. into enterprise platforms. And when CIOs go "huh?" we write them off as "not getting it".
But then - the industry is filled with examples of "shelfware", when companies some how bought software they did not need or ended up not using. So could a dose of the industry's marketing arsenal and most successful salespeople turn the social media category into the next big enterprise application irrespective of business value?
I want to debate the age old question - is software bought or sold? What do you think? Generally, and particularly around social media tools?
