So I get this in the mail from Delta Airlines
"We took some expert advice. Yours"
It's about how Delta is changing its award redemption policies. I have criticized it here and here. And while they were using the word "expert" to flatter, after 2.5 million lifetime miles on Delta and about the same on other airlines, I think I qualify as close to one.
So, I open up this Christmas present and try out on its site multiple domestic and international flights across many months. Most of them require what is called "Skychoice" - or double miles.
Which is fine if the flight is booked pretty tight, but most of them show lots of available seats like this one
in their real-time seat chart (click to enlarge). The only seats not available in the section of the 777 are usually set aside for crew and security. In fact on this particular flight on 10 different days across the next year I saw similarly almost 90% available seats and still Delta wants us to pay double miles to get an award seat.
Delta, we earned these miles the hard way. Quit playing Grinch when it comes to redeem them. You are not giving me and others much incentive to earn even more miles - ezactly when you desperately need the revenue.
