While the Yankees and Red Sox battle it out yet again, this is a week for debutantes. Ivory Coast, Ukraine, Togo and 5 other teams make their debut in World Cup Soccer. The Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals against Miami. And meanwhile in basketball God country, Charlotte has taken a 2-0 lead in the ice hockey Stanley Cup.
All this is great news for technology debutantes too. The World Cup will give mobile TV a huge boost. In hockey, wireless technologies are also creeping in. In Dallas, Mark Cuban is showing he can run tech and sports franchises with equal ease.
And technology is helping sports converge. The EU is funding Lematch.org which is building a platform to allow for better camera and other tracking of players and objects (like putts and balls) and their presentation in multiple formats. So, the truck driver in Murfreesboro, TN can cheer for the Hurricanes or, unlikely as it might be for the NY Yankees no matter where he is driving. And the one in Manchester who has no intention of going anywhere but his couch and his pub can yell at the TV for the next couple of weeks.
