James Governor has a post on IBM’s Dynamic Infrastructure and cites several inefficiencies in today’s data centers.
I would probe IBM itself (and HP/EDS and Accenture and other outsourcers) – many of these data centers are run by them. Customers are locked into multi-year contracts and their outsourcing units are still trying to milk revenue from Cold-war era bunkers.
Also, as I have cataloged in the Data Center category on New Florence many of the innovations in next-gen DC design have come from Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and newer cloud computing vendors.
So while IBM’s Tivoli and other infrastructure software units may salivate, not sure they have sold their outsourcing buddies yet. Worse, those outsourcing teams may not be competitive when it comes to renewal or more likely, early termination to get away from current DC inefficiencies.
