There are a lot of things to like about the iPhone, and some that are not. I wish people would just come out and say " Don't even think about doing this or that with the iPhone"
Exhibit 1 - iPhone as navigation tool
Consumer Reports, usually a fearless champion of consumer rights, dances around the issue and takes 6 paras to come to this point
" Should you take a wrong turn, or intentionally deviate from the recommended route, your blue beacon simply leaves the highlighted route. Unlike a PND, the iPhone 3G will not automatically reroute. This is a significant limitation for driving, especially as it depends on your reading the screen for guidance, meaning your eyes must routinely leave the road to check progress—a safety concern. If you are off course, you can reroute from your current location by manually forcing the route to be plotted anew."
Are you kidding me? It should put in BIG, RED letters - DON'T IPHONE AND DRIVE
Exhibit 2 - iPhone battery
This post at IT Pro regurgitates Apple's tips to extend battery life
· Turn off 3G
· Minimize use of location services
· Fetch new data
less frequently
· Turn off push mail
· Auto-check fewer email
accounts
· Minimize use of third-party applications
· Turn off
Wi-Fi
· Turn off Bluetooth
· Use Airplane Mode in low- or no-coverage
areas
· Adjust brightness
· Turn off EQ
Are you kidding me? I use my current 3G Phone 14-16-18 hours a day, starting as an alarm, then regularly for email and web access, bluetooth the phone to my car speakerphone all day long, as an MP3 on flights, use as GPS navigator every time I drive in a new city, as an occasional modem, camera and more.
Don't tell me to curtail my mobile life. Tell me to go buy a car charger to make the battery work all day.
Indeed, take the Consumer Reports input from above and say "DON"T IPHONE AND DRIVE. DO RECHARGE IT WHILE YOU DRIVE"
And by the way, put some heat on Apple to make those features production strength.
