I read in BusinessWeek the Indian government wants RIM to route Blackberry calls and e-mails through government computer servers based in India. National security is the reasoning.
So now the bad guys know to avoid using Blackberries for their "sensitive traffic". In the meantime legitimate business people will have their emails exposed to a bunch of bureaucrats.
While I am not surprised the Indian government is pushing for it (as intelligence agencies do in every country around the world). I am surprised there appears to be no civil liberty or other institution pushing for safeguards.
The quote "industry insiders think BlackBerry subscribers would probably prefer to see the issue resolved than have their mobile e-mail services suddenly go dark." should read " industry insiders pushed the Indian government to require specific court approval to only track traffic specific to identified suspects and to provide strict guidelines on how the data collected would be accessed, archived and destroyed"
