Fellow EI, Dion Hinchcliffe does a nice job summarizing his predictions for mashups, social networks, mobile computing, richer UI and more - then ends with "as Vinnie Mirchandani says, Web 2.0 apps are still stuck in between the margins of “real” business apps?"
Guilty as charged. Personally, I am as excited as him about gadgets and widgets and web services...but not sure 95% of the predictions on blogs need to focus on them. Because they are still early, promising but have shown very little enterprise payback - preferably financial, but social, emotional, collaborative, whatever. Honestly I am far more impressed with the innovations in
virtualization, use of sensors in healthcare, and several other
innovation categories on the New Florence blog. The payback is clearer.
In the end, business benchmarks - for check processing costs, best practices in supply chain management etc - are what matter. I wish more of our predictions were focused on technology enabled business results, not just based on the coolness to us individually of the gadget or the widget.
